From 1987 the Metro was sold simply as the Metro after the cessation of the Austin brand. At the end of 1987 the Austin marque was shelved, and some Mark 2 Metros are therefore known to have been registered on a J prefix registration plate indicating an August 1991 registration date. The Rover Group, successor to British Leyland, then built the car at Longbridge. It was the end of the Austin name on the Metro.
