The Mark 1 was introduced by BL on 8 October 1980 as the Austin Mini Metro, a replacement for the Mini planned within BL since the early 1970s, which had reached an advanced state as the ADO88 by 1977. In late 1977 BL chairman Michael Edwardes ordered an eleventh hour redesign to make it both larger and less utilitarian in appearance. Longbridge was expanded in 1978 with a 200 million pound robotised body assembly line to make it. Its model years run from 1980 to 1984.
