In 1982 Carbodies took responsibility for the complete manufacture of the FX4 after British Leyland, the parent of Austin, lost interest in it, and it took over the intellectual property rights to the cab, which it thereafter produced under its own name. This began the second phase of the cab as the FX4R. By this time the FX4 was the only product of the company, despite attempts at new lines. The cab then became known as the FX4R.
