In 1971 the 2178 cubic centimeter diesel engine of the FX4 was replaced by a larger 2520 cubic centimeter version, and this was the FX4D, which was available from 1971 through 1982. In the same year Carbodies bought the FX4 chassis assembly line from the British Leyland factory at Adderley Park in Birmingham and moved it to Coventry, making it the complete manufacturer of the cab in practice if not in name.
