A 3 litre Perkins diesel engine had been offered as an option, and together with pressure from Mann and Overton it prompted the Austin Motor Company to develop its own diesel engine for the cab. That engine appeared in 1956 and quickly became the most popular choice in the FX3. A conversion to a Standard diesel engine had also been offered by the bus and taxi owners Birch Brothers of Kentish Town because the petrol engine proved too expensive to run.
