In September 1974 BL introduced an upmarket Allegro branded as the Vanden Plas 1500, quoting a list price of 1,951 pounds, when the UK starting price for the Austin Allegro was 1,159 pounds. The quartic steering wheel was unpopular and was dropped in 1974 when the SS model was replaced by the HL. The same vehicle was built in Italy by Innocenti from 1974 and sold as the Innocenti Regent. The Vanden Plas 1500 cost far more than the basic Allegro.
