American Motors provided a styling refresh for its newly named Matador for the 1971 model year, which shared the platform and body design from the firewall rearward with the full size AMC Ambassador. Revisions for 1971 included lengthening the wheelbase by 4 inches to improve the ride, and the front styling featured a new grille, chrome trim and a lighter wraparound bumper. The What's a Matador advertising campaign was launched to establish a distinct marketing identity, and about fifty Matadors with the Machine Go package were produced.
