The De Havilland Canada DHC-8, known as the Dash 8, is a family of twin-turboprop regional airliners introduced by de Havilland Canada in 1984. It was developed from the Dash 7 by dropping the short-takeoff requirement and using two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100-series engines instead of four smaller ones, for better cruise performance and lower operating costs. The prototype first flew on 20 June 1983 and the type entered service in 1984 with NorOntair. It was built in four sizes, the Series 100, 200, 300 and the Series 400 with 68 to 90 seats. Bombardier bought the company in 1992, and from 1996 its Dash 8 aircraft carried an active noise and vibration system, with later production renamed the Q-Series. A total of 672 of the earlier models were built, the 1,000th Dash 8 was delivered in November 2010, and Longview took over the programme in 2019.
