The waterborne transport of liquid or gas cargo, chiefly crude oil, refined petroleum products and liquefied natural gas, carried in the specialized holds of a purpose built tanker ship rather than in containers or as dry bulk. Tanker shipping moves the great majority of the world's traded oil and gas between producing regions and refineries or import terminals, and tanker vessels are generally sized and built differently depending on whether they carry crude oil, refined products, chemicals or liquefied gas.
