An oil tanker is a merchant ship built with internal tanks to carry crude oil or refined petroleum products in bulk, ranging from small coastal tankers to the very large crude carriers that move oil between continents. The type grew enormously in size and number over the twentieth century as global oil trade expanded, and its tank design, double hulls on modern vessels, and cargo handling systems are built specifically around the risks of transporting a flammable liquid cargo at sea.

The first successful oil tanker was Zoroaster, built by Sven Alexander Almqvist in Motala Verkstad, which carried its 246 metric tons (242 long tons) of kerosene cargo in two iron tanks joined by pipes.
