Zundapp KS 601

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The Zundapp KS 601 was a large touring motorcycle built by the German manufacturer Zundapp from 1938, powered by a flat-twin engine of 597cc mounted transversely in a pressed-steel frame, an unusual and rugged layout that earned it the nickname of Green Elephant among German riders for its size and typical military-green finish. Designed for comfortable long-distance touring and sidecar use, it combined durable shaft-style drive with plunger rear suspension that was advanced for its era, and civilian and military variants both saw service through and after the Second World War. Production continued into the 1950s, and the KS 601 is remembered as one of the most technically ambitious German touring motorcycles of the prewar and immediate postwar period.
