A tank truck is a motor vehicle built to carry liquids or gases on roads, built insulated or uninsulated and pressurized or unpressurized, sometimes with internal compartments to carry more than one load at once. Oil was originally delivered in cans before horse-drawn tank wagons took over from the 1880s; the first motorized tank trucks appeared in 1910 when Standard Oil began using them, and Anglo American Oil introduced underground storage tanks and delivery tankers to the United Kingdom in 1920. By the mid-1930s some operators ran tankers exceeding 16,000 liters in capacity. Tank trucks remain essential to moving fuel, milk, chemicals, water and other liquid commodities, but their high center of gravity and the free-surface effect of liquid sloshing inside a partly filled tank make them especially prone to rollover accidents relative to other heavy vehicles.
