A velomobile is a human-powered vehicle, typically a recumbent tricycle, enclosed in a lightweight aerodynamic shell that shields the rider from weather and reduces wind resistance compared with an open bicycle. Developed from recumbent cycling designs in the twentieth century, it is used for commuting, touring and long-distance human-powered travel, and its enclosed, low-slung shape allows sustained speeds well above those of a conventional upright bicycle for the same rider effort.
