Surrey (carriage)

A surrey is a doorless, four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage that became popular in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, typically seating four passengers on two spindle-backed bench seats and fitted with a variety of tops, from a rigid fringed canopy to a simple parasol. The name derives from surrey cart, referencing the English county of Surrey where the design was first manufactured, and the vehicle served as everyday passenger transportation before the rise of the automobile. The surrey achieved lasting cultural prominence well beyond its working life through its celebration in the musical Oklahoma!, in the song The Surrey with the Fringe on Top.
