The Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle is a rear-engine narrow-body jet airliner built by the French manufacturer Sud Aviation, the first jet airliner designed specifically for short and medium-range routes. It first flew on 27 May 1955 and entered commercial service with Scandinavian Airlines on 26 April 1959, and its distinctive rear-mounted engine layout, chosen to give a clean wing and a quieter cabin, went on to influence the design of later narrow-body jets. Sud Aviation built 282 Caravelles between 1958 and 1972, and the last examples remained flying until the type's retirement in 2005.
