SS Themistocles (1911)

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Themistocles was a British steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the Aberdeen Line, launched on 22 September 1910 and completed on 12 January 1911 as a sister of Pericles and Demosthenes. She measured 11,231 gross register tons, had berths for 103 first class, 400 second class and 500 emigrant class passengers, and twin screws driven by quadruple-expansion steam engines rated at 1,075 nominal horsepower. She began her maiden voyage from London to Sydney in February 1911. White Star Line managed her for a few years, and she later sailed for Shaw, Savill and Albion. She served as a troop ship in the First World War and also saw service in the Second World War, and she arrived at Dalmuir on the Clyde in August 1947 to be scrapped.
