SS Southern Cross (1954)

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Southern Cross was an ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line for services from Europe to Australia, ordered on 16 July 1952 and launched on 17 August 1954 as the first passenger liner launched by a reigning British monarch. She entered service in 1955. She was the first passenger ship of over 20,000 gross register tons with the engine room and funnel near the stern rather than amidships, which started a trend that most passenger ships now follow, and the first major liner with no cargo space beyond stores and luggage. In 1975 she was rebuilt as a cruise ship and sailed as Calypso, Azure Seas and OceanBreeze until 2003, when she was sold for scrap in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
