SS Rex was an Italian ocean liner built by Gio. Ansaldo and Company at Sestri Ponente near Genoa for Navigazione Generale Italiana, later absorbed into the Italian Line, launched on 1 August 1931 and promoted as a symbol of national pride during the Fascist era. Rex entered service on her maiden voyage on 27 September 1932, and in August 1933 she captured the westbound Blue Riband with an average speed of 28.92 knots, a record she held until 1935. On 8 September 1944 Rex was attacked and destroyed in the Bay of Koper by Allied Beaufighter aircraft, capsizing in shallow water, and about a third of the wreck was salvaged for scrap during the 1950s.
