SS Europa was a German ocean liner built for Norddeutscher Lloyd by the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg, launched on 15 August 1928 and, alongside her sister ship Bremen, one of the most advanced high-speed transatlantic liners of her era. On her maiden voyage on 19 March 1930 Europa won the Blue Riband with an average speed of 27.91 knots and a crossing time of 4 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes, holding the record until Bremen recaptured it in 1933. Captured by Allied forces in 1945 and briefly operated as the American troopship USS Europa, she was given to France in 1946 to replace the destroyed Normandie, refitted and renamed Liberte, and served the French Line until 1962 before being scrapped in Italy in 1963.
