SS Doric (1883)

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

SS Doric was a British ocean liner of the White Star Line, built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and launched on 10 March 1883, the sister of Ionic, which entered service a few months earlier. Both began their careers chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company on the route from London to Wellington, and from 1885 she served the joint White Star and Shaw, Savill and Albion service. She was built of steel, a first for a yard that had previously built only in iron, and was mainly propelled by steam, with compound machines driving a propeller for 13 knots that were replaced in 1895 by more economical triple expansion machines giving 14 knots. She was later chartered to the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company between Hong Kong and San Francisco and in 1906 was sold to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company as Asia. On 23 April 1911 she ran aground in fog and was wrecked near the Taichow Islands, off Wenzhou in South China.
