SS Bremen was a German ocean liner built for Norddeutscher Lloyd by Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau, launched on 16 August 1928 and designed with high-speed engines and a low, streamlined profile that, together with her sister ship Europa, made her one of the fastest transatlantic liners of the 1930s. On her maiden voyage on 16 July 1929 Bremen captured the westbound Blue Riband with an average speed of 27.83 knots and then set an eastbound record of 27.91 knots on the return crossing, an unprecedented feat for a liner's first two crossings. The ship was destroyed by a fire set by a 14-year-old crew member in an act of personal revenge at Bremerhaven on 16 March 1941, and her burned-out hull was demolished with explosives in 1946.
