Sikorsky S-60

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Sikorsky S-60 was a prototype flying crane helicopter derived from the S-56 (CH-37). It kept two Pratt and Whitney Wasp radial piston engines but had a radically different fuselage, only a cockpit and an open area where pods for different tasks could be carried. It first flew on 25 March 1959 but proved underpowered, and its sole example crashed on 3 April 1961. Its development led to the larger, turbine-engined CH-54 Tarhe and the civil S-64 Skycrane, which were already on the drawing board.
