The Sikorsky S-42 is a long range commercial flying boat built by Sikorsky Aircraft to a specification laid out by Pan American Airways, the aircraft's sole customer, with its prototype first flying in March 1934. Ten examples were built, and S-42s surveyed Pan Am's trans-Pacific routes, opened service between San Francisco and New Zealand, and in July 1937 made the first regular airline crossing of the North Atlantic Ocean starting from the United States.
