Sikorsky S-34

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Sikorsky S-34 was a 1920s American six-seat sesquiplane amphibian designed and built by the Sikorsky Manufacturing Corporation. It had a boat hull with room for five passengers, two tractor 200-horsepower Wright Whirlwind J-4 engines and a boom-mounted twin-rudder tail, and it was the first Sikorsky aircraft with a boat hull. Only one was built; during a test flight in November 1927 one engine failed and it crashed and sank, though Igor Sikorsky and the others aboard escaped without injury. The design led to the successful Sikorsky S-38.
