Siemens P2000

Passenger Rolling Stock and High-Speed Trainsets

The Siemens P2000 is an articulated light rail vehicle made by Siemens Mobility for the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission asked for bids in July 1992 for cars for the Green Line then under construction, and in June 1993 it gave Siemens-Duewag a contract for 72 cars at 2.7 million dollars each. Siemens-Duewag opened a plant in Carson, working with AAI Corporation, to build the car shells, the first made in the United States for 50 years, and final assembly took place in Sacramento. After cost cutting in 1995 the order was reduced, and 52 trains were built between 1996 and 1999. The first was delivered in January 1998 and service on the Green Line began in July 2000. The cars later ran on the Gold, Blue and Expo lines, were overhauled by Alstom from 2020, and Metro plans to replace them in the early 2030s.
