Shanghai Metro DC01

The Shanghai Metro DC01, renamed 01A01 and 01A02 in 2014, is a class of electric multiple unit built for Line 1 of Shanghai Metro by AEG and CSR Zhuzhou Locomotive. The contract proposed in 1988 and awarded on 13 May 1989 covered 96 carriages in 16 six-car sets, and the first delivery was on 30 October 1992. CSR Zhuzhou Locomotive expanded eleven of the trains between 2007 and 2008, adding two cars to each of ten sets and replacing the traction systems, with a GTO chopper giving way to IGBT variable-frequency drives and DC motors to AC motors, so that every train became an eight-car set. A third batch of 30 cars for the remaining sets followed in 2008 and 2009. The 01A01 trains, which had structural cracks, were fully retired from service in June 2024, while the 01A02 trains were chosen for refurbishment to extend their lives by a further fourteen years.
