A British ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line, at the time of her completion the largest ship afloat. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York she struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912 and sank early the next morning, with the loss of more than 1,500 of the roughly 2,224 people aboard, one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters and the origin of major reforms to maritime safety law.
