RMS Pendennis Castle

Passenger and Ocean Liner Vessels

RMS Pendennis Castle was a Royal Mail Ship, passenger and cargo liner operated by the Union-Castle Line. The company ordered her from Harland and Wolff in early 1955 to replace the ageing Arundel Castle, which had over 30 years of service. A shipyard strike cancelled her planned launch on 10 December 1957, so she was christened by the Dowager Lady Rotherwick and launched without ceremony on 24 December 1957. She served the Union-Castle Line from 1959 to 1976 on the regular Cape Mail service from Southampton to Las Palmas, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban. After her withdrawal and sale in 1976 she was renamed Ocean Queen, Sinbad and then Sinbad I, never returned to commercial service, and left Hong Kong for scrapping in Taiwan in April 1980.
