The RMS Carpathia is a transatlantic ocean liner built for the Cunard Line, entering service in 1903 on routes between Europe and North America, and is remembered principally for rescuing the roughly seven hundred surviving passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic after that ship struck an iceberg and sank in April 1912. Carpathia altered course and steamed through a field of ice at considerable risk to reach the Titanic's last reported position, arriving hours after the sinking to recover survivors from the lifeboats and carry them on to New York, an act of rescue that made the ship and its captain internationally famous. Carpathia continued in ordinary passenger and later wartime transport service until it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland in 1918.
