A post chaise is a fast, closed four-wheeled carriage used across Europe from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries for hired travel along post roads. Usually drawn by two or four horses, it was driven by a postilion who rode one of the horses rather than sitting on a coachman's box, and passengers changed to fresh horses at posting inns spaced along the route.
