The Piper PA-16 Clipper is a light aircraft that is an extended fuselage model of the PA-15 Vagabond. Both were designed in 1947 because Piper Aircraft was in dire financial straits and needed competitive new models built from existing parts and tooling. The Clipper is a stretched and refined Vagabond intended to seat four people, with an extra wing tank, added doors and a Lycoming O-235 engine. It sold for 2995 dollars in 1949, when the average four-place airplane cost over 5000 dollars, and only 736 were built in its single year of production. Pan Am objected to Piper using the Clipper name, so Piper added flaps, more fuel and yokes in place of control sticks and fitted a more powerful engine, giving the PA-20 Pacer. The FAA counted 303 still in service in the United States in April 2018.
