The Piper PA-11 Cub Special is a later-production variant of the J-3 Cub, a high-wing braced cabin monoplane with a tail-wheel undercarriage and an enclosed cabin with two tandem seats. Compared with the J-3 it has a fully enclosed engine cowling as on the J-5, a more shallow windshield and the fuel tank in the port wing root, and early aircraft used a Continental A65-8 engine with a Continental C90-8 as an option. The prototype first flew in August 1946, the first production aircraft was completed at Lock Haven in March 1947, and production there continued until September 1949, with a second line at Ponca City. It formed the basis of the PA-18 Super Cub.
