The Piper J-5 Cub Cruiser was a larger, more powerful version of the Piper J-3 Cub, designed two years after it, with a wider fuselage that put the pilot in front and two passengers in the rear seat. With a 75 horsepower Continental engine its cruising speed was 75 miles per hour, and it first sold for 1,798 dollars. The early J-5A, J-5B and J-5C versions with external bungee landing gear numbered 783 built between 1940 and early 1942, and those built from 1944 to 1946 took design changes from the United States Navy HE-1 flying ambulance. After the war the J-5C became the PA-12 Super Cruiser, and the PA-14 Family Cruiser followed it. In August 2018, 327 J-5s remained on the United States registry.
