Pennsylvania Railroad T1

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Pennsylvania Railroad T1 was a class of duplex drive 4-4-4-4 steam locomotives built for the Pennsylvania Railroad, with two prototypes completed in 1942 followed by fifty production examples in 1945 and 1946. Streamlined by the industrial designer Raymond Loewy and among the last steam locomotives the railroad ever built, the class proved fast but troubled in service, suffering persistent wheelslip and high maintenance costs that helped push the Pennsylvania Railroad toward full dieselization by 1948.
