A palanquin is an enclosed litter, typically a covered box or chair mounted on two carrying poles, borne on the shoulders of bearers to transport a single passenger. Used across large parts of Asia for centuries, including in China, India and Southeast Asia, it served as a mode of travel for rulers, nobility and officials and remains in ceremonial use in some regions today, most visibly to carry a bride in traditional wedding processions.
