North American FJ-1 Fury

Military Aircraft

The North American FJ-1 Fury was an early turbojet-powered carrier-capable fighter developed by North American Aviation for the United States Navy from 1945. It became the first jet aircraft in United States Navy service to serve at sea under operational conditions. It was a straight-winged fighter with a single General Electric J35 turbojet fed by an intake that passed through the fuselage, and its wing, tail and canopy strongly resembled those of the piston-engined P-51D Mustang. The prototype XFJ-1 first flew in November 1946 and the first of 30 production aircraft was delivered in March 1948. It was briefly operational during the transition to better designs and ended its career in Naval Reserve units, retiring in 1953. An evolution of it became the XP-86 prototype of the F-86 Sabre.
