The Nieuport 17 is a French sesquiplane fighter introduced in March 1916, offering markedly better maneuverability and climb than its predecessors and quickly becoming the primary fighter of the French air service. Nearly every leading French ace flew it, including Georges Guynemer, Charles Nungesser and Maurice Boyau, along with British Empire aces such as Billy Bishop and Albert Ball, before it was outclassed by newer German fighters such as the Albatros D.III by mid-1917.
