The Mitsubishi Type 73 light truck is a series of military light trucks used as mini SUVs by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, where it is officially the 1/2 Ton Truck, and Mitsubishi Motors has produced it since 1973. It runs on Mitsubishi-made four-cylinder diesel engines with a total of 123 horsepower. The first generation, the Kyu, began in 1973 on the chassis of the Jeep CJ-3B that Mitsubishi built under licence from Willys, later followed by a CJ-5A-J54 based version; both gasoline and diesel variants were made, over 200,000 in all, and production ended in 1997. The second generation, the Shin, began in 1996 on the frame of the Pajero. Kyu trucks were exported as military surplus to the Philippines and South Vietnam, and Shin trucks have been provided to Ukraine since 2023. Variants carry anti-tank missile launchers, recoilless rifles and machine guns, or radar and communications equipment with winches.
