The McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle is an American all-weather multirole strike fighter derived from the F-15 Eagle. It was designed in the 1980s for the Dual-Role Fighter program to carry out long-range, high-speed interdiction without escort or electronic warfare support, and it is recognised by its tandem-seat cockpit, conformal fuel tanks and LANTIRN pods behind the intake ramps. McDonnell Douglas built it, the first flight came in 1986, and production continued under Boeing after the 1997 merger. It gradually replaced the F-111 Aardvark as the Air Force primary strike fighter, 236 were built for the USAF between 1985 and 2001, and it has been exported to several countries.
