McDonnell Douglas F-15 STOL/MTD

Supersonic and Experimental Aircraft

The McDonnell Douglas F-15 STOL/MTD, for Short Takeoff and Landing and Maneuver Technology Demonstrator, was a modified F-15 Eagle built as a technology demonstrator to study thrust vectoring and enhanced maneuverability. The airframe was the first two-seat F-15 built by McDonnell Douglas, pre-production TF-15A number 1, the sixth F-15 off the assembly line and the oldest F-15 flying until its retirement. It also served as the avionics testbed for the F-15E Strike Eagle program, then flew for NASA as tail number 837 in the F-15 ACTIVE program from 1993 to 1999 and the Intelligent Flight Control System program through 2008. It is now on display at Edwards Air Force Base.
