Locomotion No. 1

Steam and Early Locomotives

Locomotion No. 1 is an early steam locomotive built by Robert Stephenson and Company, put into service in 1825 to haul the opening train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in northern England, widely regarded as the first public railway to carry both freight and fare-paying passengers using steam locomotive power. Built several years before Stephenson's later and more famous Rocket, it demonstrated that a steam locomotive could reliably haul substantial loads on a public line rather than only within an industrial colliery, helping establish the practical case for steam railways that spread rapidly across Britain and beyond in the following decade.
