LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard is a streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in 1938 at Doncaster Works for the London and North Eastern Railway, to a design by Nigel Gresley. Its wind tunnel tested body let A4 engines run long express passenger trains such as the Silver Jubilee and the Coronation at speeds well above 90 miles per hour just to keep to the timetable. On 3 July 1938 Mallard reached 126 miles per hour (203 kilometres per hour), a speed that still stands as the world record for steam locomotives. It covered almost one and a half million miles before it was retired in 1963. The locomotive is about 70 feet long and weighs 165 long tons including its tender, and it is painted LNER garter blue with red wheels. It is preserved at the National Railway Museum in York as part of the National Collection.
