The Jubilee class was a group of five passenger and cargo ocean liners built by Harland and Wolff at Belfast for the White Star Line's service between Liverpool, Cape Town and Sydney: Afric, Medic and Persic, which entered service in 1899, and Runic and Suevic, which followed in 1901. They took the name because their commissioning coincided with Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The ships offered a single class of accommodation, described as third class but better than most, with room for 320 passengers in the first three and 400 in the last two. They also carried about 15,000 deadweight tons of cargo, much of it in refrigerated holds for Australian mutton and a hold built for wool bales. Two quadruple-expansion steam engines drove two propellers at around 14 knots. Several later became whale factory ships.
