Giulio Cesare was one of three Conte di Cavour class dreadnought battleships built for the Italian navy. She was laid down at the Gio. Ansaldo & C. shipyard in Genoa in June 1910, launched in October 1911 and completed in May 1914, and spent the First World War as a flagship in the southern Adriatic without seeing action. Between 1933 and 1937 she was extensively rebuilt with a lengthened hull, more powerful guns, extra armour and far greater speed. In the Second World War she fought at the Battle of Calabria and took part in the Battle of Cape Spartivento and the First Battle of Sirte before becoming a training ship. She was handed to the Soviet Union in 1949 as Novorossiysk and was lost in 1955 to an explosion that killed 617 men; she was salvaged and scrapped.
