The Hyundai Terracan was a mid-size SUV that Hyundai Motor Company produced from 2001 to 2007, and that stayed in production in China with the Hawtai Motor Group until 2011. Its design was previewed by the Hyundai Highland concept and its chassis was derived from the second generation Mitsubishi Pajero, which made it a truck-based four-wheel-drive vehicle. It was offered with three engines, a 2.9 litre Hyundai J diesel inline-four, a 2.5 litre diesel inline-four licensed from Mitsubishi and a 3.5 litre Sigma V6 petrol engine, the more economical 2.9 litre diesel being offered in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Australian cars came in base and Highlander trims, the latter with leather seats, climate control and an automatic four-wheel-drive differential. The name derives from the Tarascan, a Mesoamerican empire of west central Mexico, and the Hyundai Veracruz replaced the Terracan.
