Hyundai Stellar

Automobiles

The Hyundai Stellar was a large family car that Hyundai Motor Company produced from July 1983 until the 1992 model year. It succeeded the Ford Cortina, which Hyundai had built under license, and it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro on a rear-wheel-drive chassis taken from the Cortina Mark V. Engine and transmission were licensed from Mitsubishi Motors, with 1.4 and 1.6 litre four-cylinder engines until 1986 and a 2.0 litre engine from 1987. It had wishbone front suspension and a coil-sprung live rear axle, and in Britain it competed on price with a smaller Escort rather than a Sierra; it was sold there from June 1984 until the Lantra arrived in 1991 and was the second Hyundai imported to Europe. In South Korea the lower trims were later replaced by the Sonata, while LPG taxi versions with 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines continued until January 1997.
