The Hyundai Scoupe, also written S-Coupe, was a two-door coupe that Hyundai produced from 1990 to 1995, built on the underpinnings of the contemporary Hyundai Excel. The name combines sporty and coupe and was pronounced scoop. Development began in 1985 and Hyundai showed the Sports-looking Car concept at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show; regular production started in February 1990 after about 521 billion won of development cost. The car reached the United States for the 1991 model year at a base price of 8,495 US dollars, thousands less than comparable sporty coupes. An in-house Alpha engine of 1.5 litres replaced the original Mitsubishi design in April 1991, with a turbocharged Alpha added that October, and a facelift brought the stylised H badge in the 1993 model year. In total 242,441 Scoupes were built before the Tiburon replaced it in 1996.
