Hyundai Ioniq

Automobiles

The Hyundai Ioniq was a compact five-door liftback that Hyundai manufactured and marketed from 2016 to 2022. It was the first Hyundai offered without a standard internal combustion engine, sold instead as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric car, and it was built from the ground up for those powertrains. The hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016 and the three variants appeared together at the 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows; the electric model followed in July 2016 and the plug-in hybrid in February 2017. The hybrid paired a 1.6-litre Kappa four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine with a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, and an aerodynamic body brought the drag coefficient down to 0.24. From its first model year through 2019 the Ioniq Electric was the EPA's most efficient rated vehicle, at 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent. Production ended in July 2022 in favour of the Ioniq 5 and later battery electric models.
