The Hyundai i40 was a large family car that Hyundai designed mainly for the European market and built between 2011 and 2019. It shared its platform with the Hyundai Sonata and was designed at Hyundai's European research and development facility in Russelsheim, Germany, while production took place at the Ulsan plant in South Korea. The sedan was unveiled at the 2011 Barcelona Motor Show, but the car was launched in Europe first as an estate, sold as the i40 Tourer, which reached Europe and South Korea in September 2011, with the sedan following in January 2012. The estate had a boot of 553 litres, growing to 1,719 litres with the rear seats folded. It wore the fluidic sculpture design language, offered up to three engines from a total of four, a 1.7 litre diesel in two states of tune and 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol units, and was not sold in the United States, where the Sonata stayed on sale.
