Marketed heavily from the 1990s onward as an accessible, versatile alternative for riders who wanted a comfortable bicycle suitable for paved streets, light trails and errand-running without the specialized limitations of either a pure road bicycle or a pure mountain bike, it became one of the best-selling categories in the bicycle retail market.
